Nextchem awarded a pre-FEED by Engie for the production of 2nd generation biomethane in France

MAIRE announces that Nextchem, through its subsidiary NextChem Tech, has been awarded a new contract by Engie to carry out a pre-FEED for the gasification and methanation of the waste wood as well as the implementation of a carbon capture unit for the Salamandre project in the Normandy region.

This award follows the successful completion of the advanced basic engineering study for the gasification of the waste wood and the purification system of the syngas to produce 2nd generation biomethane, which was announced in April 2023. NextChem’s scope also includes the preliminary evaluation and estimate of the Engineering, Procurement and Construction activities for the full gasification and methanation package of the project, including the relevant utilities and ancillary units, which will be considered as part of the Client’s Final Investment Decision.

The plant is expected to produce 20MW equivalent of bio-methane. The methane, produced through pyro-gasification of waste wood, will be injected in the grid, representing one of the first industrial projects of its kind in the world.

Alessandro Bernini, CEO of MAIRE, commented: “This new agreement with ENGIE is a further proof of MAIRE’s recognized know-how in developing and implementing sustainable technology solutions, in line with the new European regulations for the production of syngas and bio-methane from waste wood and biomass.”
