Russia's Gazprom seeks to liberalize domestic gas market

(Reuters) - Russian energy giant Gazprom has asked the government to liberalize wholesale gas prices for domestic industrial consumers in some regions as it faces a steep decline in exports, Kommersant daily reported on Thursday.
State-owned Gazprom's gas prices on the domestic gas market are currently regulated by the government.
Kommersant said Gazprom's Deputy CEO Vitaly Markelov floated the idea at a meeting of the Russian State Council.
Gazprom did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
Domestic gas market liberalization has been under discussion for years, but not been approved so far.
Gazprom's gas exports, the key source of its earnings, almost halved last year to around 101 billion cubic meters.
