Norway's Hammerfest LNG plant halts for maintenance until July
Equinor's Hammerfest LNG terminal, Europe's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility, went offline on Tuesday as planned for annual maintenance, the company said.
The maintenance outage at the Hammerfest plant, also known as Melkoeya LNG, is scheduled to last until July 19, according to an updated regulatory filing on Tuesday afternoon.
Melkoeya LNG has the capacity to deliver about 6.5 Bm3y of gas, enough to supply about 6.5 MM European homes, and accounts for roughly 5% of all Norwegian gas exports.
An Equinor spokesperson confirmed that the company has started an extensive maintenance outage to ensure robust operations for three more years.
This included preparatory work for future projects at Melkoeya as well as regular maintenance tasks such as replacing valves, heating cables and other parts, as well as cleaning the pipe system, the spokesperson added.
The plant at Melkoeya island receives gas from the Snoehvit field in the Barents Sea, some 143 km (89 mi) offshore. Its owners are Equinor, Petoro, TotalEnergies, Vaar Energi and Harbour Energy.
