Finland's Gasgrid seeks to expand transmission network
Finnish natural gas system operator Gasgrid said on Tuesday it is considering an expansion of its pipeline distribution network in Western Finland, to accommodate plans to build synthetic methane production plants.
Synthetic methane is produced from electricity and is part of Finland's wider decarbonization drive to accelerate the introduction of renewable and low-carbon gases in industry.
"As well as responding to identified customer needs, expansion of the gas system would support reliable energy supply and Finland's security of supply," Gasgrid executive Janne Gronlund said in a statement.
The grid operator estimated that the planned renewable gas production in the region could increase supply by approximately 3–4 terawatt hours (TWh), equivalent to 25% of Finland's current gas consumption.
The network expansion section under investigation would be around 250 km–350 km long, Gasgrid said.
If implemented, the western Finland transmission network expansion project would be completed within 5 yrs–10 yrs.
