Argentina's Southern Energy signs $7-billion LNG export deal with SEFE
Argentina's Southern Energy signed a $7 billion LNG export deal with Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE), YPF Chief Executive Horacio Marin said.
SEFE has signed a preliminary agreement to buy up to 2 million tons per year of LNG from Southern Energy for eight years, with deliveries starting in late 2027 pending a final contract. The volume represents about one-third of Southern Energy’s planned output from Argentina’s first major LNG export project.
Southern Energy, established in 2024, is developing two floating LNG terminals with a combined capacity of around 6 MMtpy. The first unit, Hilli Episeyo, will deliver 2.45 MMtpy from the end of 2027, while the second FLNG, MK II, will add 3.5 MMtpy from late 2028. Both vessels, chartered from Golar LNG, will operate for 20 years at Golfo San Matías in Río Negro province.
SEFE said this marks its first LNG partnership with a South American supplier, strengthening Europe’s energy security and diversifying its portfolio. Southern Energy called the deal a milestone for unlocking Vaca Muerta’s gas potential. SEFE, owned by the German government, is one of Europe’s largest energy suppliers and continues to expand its LNG and hydrogen businesses.
