Natural gas, a key pillar of Total’s strategy
Natural gas is currently the best option to provide the world with the energy it needs while combating global warming.
Natural gas presents two advantages: on the one hand, it meets the needs of developing economies such as China, India and other Asian countries – all the International Energy Agency scenarios expect a growing demand for gas – and on the other hand, it’s the fossil fuel with the least emissions. Replacing coal with natural gas in power plants would for example help reduce world CO2 emissions by 10%.
This is why natural gas is a key pillar of our strategy. Our activities are manifold and span the entire natural gas chain: gas production, LNG transport and trading, gas power plants to produce electricity, natural gas supply for households and businesses and even solutions for transport such as natural gas for vehicles or LNG as marine fuel.
Through a strategy of high investment, we expect this energy to amount to 60% of our hydrocarbon mix in the next 20 years, up from 50% today. To do this, we are developing projects around the world: from South America to Russia, where our main project, Yamal LNG, was launched in 2017, all the way to the North Sea, Qatar and the Ichthys project in Australia or a major project under development in Papua New Guinea.
We have developed particular expertise in liquified natural gas (LNG), a sector in which we have become the world’s second largest player – with a current market share of 10% - after the integration of Engie’s LNG assets in 2018.
Our Group participates in floating regasification terminal projects (FSRU) and contributes to the development of the LNG industry for maritime transport.
We continue to invest to develop the many uses of natural gas – for example in the mobility area by deploying solutions adapted to environmental issues, particularly natural gas for vehicles. We already have 550 natural gas service stations in Asia, and our objective is to operate 350 stations in Europe by 2022.
In France and in Europe, we position ourselves in the supply of natural gas and electricity to households and businesses.
