Wärtsilä reaches mechanical completion at LNG terminal in Finland

Finland's Wärtsilä has reached mechanical completion of the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract of the Tornio Manga LNG terminal in northern Finland.

Wärtsilä's turnkey solution for the terminal includes complete ship unloading, full containment LNG storage, LNG truck loading, ship bunkering, regasification and natural gas sendout facilities.

The storage tank, with a volume of 50,000 m3, and the new terminal will be the largest LNG receiving terminal in the Nordic region.

The EPC delivery is backed by a 10-yr maintenance contract for Wärtsilä to provide services related to the needs of the terminal, which is scheduled to commence LNG deliveries to customers in the spring of 2018.

When in commercial operation, the Tornio Manga LNG terminal will supply natural gas to a local stainless steel mill, and LNG to local industries and other consumers in the region.

The terminal will play a significant role in enabling growth and reducing the carbon footprint of the region's industrial operations.

The next major step of the project is expected to take place in November 2017, when the first shipment of LNG is scheduled for arrival.

Reliquefaction technology for LNG carriers. Wärtsilä has also been awarded contracts to supply its reliquefaction plants to three new LNG carriers currently under construction.

One ship is being built at the Samsung Heavy Industries yard in South Korea for the international owner and operator Gaslog. The others are for Norway-based Knutsen and are being built at the Hyundai Heavy Industries yard in South Korea.

The order was booked for the Gaslog ship in April 2017 and for the Knutsen ships in May and June 2017.

The re-liquefaction plant ordered for the vessels features Wärtsilä's latest mixed refrigerant (MR) technology, an energy-efficient solution for smaller liquefaction applications. The new installations will have capacities of 1.5 tph–2.5 tph.
