EIA report details natural gas production and consumption

EIA Natural Gas Use

With data through March 2017, the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) has released its May Natural Gas Monthly report. Key findings include:

  • In March 2017, for the 13th consecutive month, dry natural gas production decreased year-to-year from the same month a year ago. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in March 2017 was 2,219 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 71.6 Bcfd. This level was a 1.8 Bcfd (2.4%) decrease from the March 2016 level of 73.4 Bcfd.
  • The estimated natural gas consumption level in March 2017 was 2,505 Bcf, or 80.8 Bcfd. This level was an increase of 6.2%, or 4.7 Bcfd, from the 2,359 Bcf consumed in March 2016.
  • Year-over-year total consumption of dry natural gas in March 2017 increased in three of the four consuming sectors, with the exception being electric power deliveries, which decreased year-over-year. Deliveries of natural gas by consuming sector in March 2017 were as follows:
    • Residential deliveries in March 2017 were 582 Bcf, or 18.8 Bcfde, up 26.8% from 14.8 Bcfd in March 2016.
    • Commercial deliveries were 370 Bcf, or 11.9 Bcfd, up 23.3% from 9.7 Bcfd in March 2016.
    • Industrial deliveries were 689 Bcf, or 22.2 Bcfd, up 4.1% from 21.4 Bcfd in March 2016. Industrial deliveries were the highest for March since the EIA began tracking them in 2001.
    • Electric power deliveries were 667 Bcf, or 21.5 Bcfd, down 10.2% from 24.0 Bcfd in March 2016. Electric power deliveries were the lowest for March since 2014.
