Bulgarian, Slovak gas operators to cooperate on projects

(Reuters) The gas pipeline operators of Bulgaria and Slovakia have signed an memorandum of understanding to work together to link the proposed Eastring pipeline and Balkan gas hub project, Bulgaria's energy ministry said on Friday.

Slovakia's Eustream and Bulgaria's Bulgartransgaz will develop a plan to match Sofia's plans for a regional gas hub at the Black Sea port of Varna with the Eastring pipeline, which is aimed at linking gas networks in central and eastern Europe and Ukraine.

Both projects are aiming at boosting security of gas supplies in the region and to reduce Sofia's almost complete reliance on Russian gas.

"The agreement confirms the connectivity of the two projects. Eastring will serve as a priority western route for the interconnection of the regional markets and Balkan gas hub," the ministry said in a statement.

Eastring's initial capacity is seen at about 15 Bcmy - 20 Bcmy and it would be able to carry gas from Russia or from the West to the Balkans.

Bulgartransgaz is planning a feasibility study for a $1.7-B hub next year that would store and transport gas from Russia and the Caspian Sea to southeastern and central Europe, following the cancellation of Gazprom's South Stream gas pipeline.

Eustream and Bulgartransgaz in June signed a memorandum to work together on the Eastring project.
