PRV optimizes safety and performance in critical gas applications
Emerson has introduced the Anderson Greenwood Type 84 pressure relief valve (PRV), specially designed to protect tanks and vessels used in hydrogen (H2) and other high-pressure gas applications. With Arlon® 3000XT thermoplastic seating and ASME SA-479 Type S21800 stainless-steel spindle material, the Type 84 PRV (FIG. 1) delivers exceptional leak-tight performance, resistance to embrittlement, optimum seat tightness, high reliability and long service life.
PRVs are frequently used in traditional applications, but they are not designed to handle extremely small molecules at very high pressures. Therefore, they are not ideal for H2 gas, which can diffuse into metals and cause embrittlement of PRV internals, increasing the risk of leaks, failures and safety problems.
FIG. 1. Emerson’s Anderson Greenwood Type 84 pressure relief valves (PRVs) are specially designed to protect tanks and vessels used in H2 and other high-pressure gas applications.
To address these and other issues, Type 84 PRVs are constructed for high-pressure gas applications, with a range of 6,000 psig (413 bar gauge) to 20,000 psig (1,379 barg) for H2 and helium (He), and a range of 6,000 psig (413 barg) to 21,756 psig (1,500 barg) for all other gases. The PRVs reach full lift at less than 5% overpressure to protect the vessel or tank to which they are affixed, with zero leakage at 90% of set pressure.
Type 84 valves feature a unique cartridge assembly design to apply uniform spring pressure, resulting in secure seat sealing and leak-tight performance. They are factory tested with He and nitrogen, both accepted industry-wide as a substitute for H2.
Anderson Greenwood Type 84 valves comply with key industry standards for safety and performance, including American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Section VIII and XIII, National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors (NB) certification, and American Petroleum Institute (API) 527.

Smart remote terminal unit enhances OT security in critical infrastructure
Schneider Electric, a leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, has revealed new operational technology (OT) cybersecurity functionality for its SCADAPack™ 470i and 474i. Critical infrastructure customers can now securely manage remote terminal unit (RTU) access in harsh environments as easily as they can manage their employees’ email access.
FIG. 2. Schneider Electric has revealed new operational technology (OT) cybersecurity functionality for its SCADAPack™ 470i and 474i.
Cyber threats to water and oil and gas pipelines continue to grow. So, controlling access to RTUs in remote and harsh environments is vital to OT security. Yet, managing this can be dangerous and time-intensive. The SCADAPack 470i and 474i (FIG. 2) provides one smart device for all remote control and computer operations. This way, customers can securely manage RTU access using standard IT tools, such as Active Directory™, in OT security, including water security and pipeline security.
The combination of a rugged RTU platform with the flexibility of Linux ensures a single SCADAPack 470i or 474i can host edge services, protocols and applications for efficient OT security for all remote control and computer operations.
SCADAPack 470i and 474i’s role-based access control (RBAC) features also aid in edge cyber regulation compliance. The SCADAPack 47xi integrates with standard IT and OT security tools with support for IP firewall, NAT, DNP3 secure authentication and more.
SCADAPack 470i and 474i’s new OT cybersecurity functionality provides customers with a unique offering as the first RTU with RBAC on the market. Its diverse capabilities within a single easy-to-use platform reduces the costs of design, installation, maintenance and edge security.

Wall-mountable analyzers for use in high-ambient temperature environments
AMETEK Process Instruments’ 993X series of analyzers, encompassing the 993X and 9933, are now IECEx Zone 2 certified for use in locations with up to 60°C (140°F) ambient temperatures. Built with IP66 rated enclosures and utilizing an integrated cooling system, the 993X analyzers can be installed outdoors or in minimally temperature-controlled enclosures, reducing complexity while lowering capital (CAPEX) and operating costs (OPEX). The new 993X configuration option complements the existing ATEX, IECEx, UKEX Zone 1 & Zone 2 and North America Class I Division 2 approvals for analyzers installed in areas with lower ambient temperatures.
Ambient temperatures have been rising at operational sites. The higher temperature rating of the 993X will provide users with an analyzer designed to continuously operate at higher temperatures, with or without temperature-controlled shelters or cabinets. For those users that cannot guarantee continuous cooling of their analyzer shelters, this version of the 993X gives them an additional level of protection for their analyzer investment.
The 993X series of analyzers uses ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy to measure hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbonyl sulfide (COS) and methyl mercaptan (CH3SH) in natural gas and biomethane gas streams. These highly advanced analyzers are also used to measure H2S, COS, carbon disulfide (CS2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and hydrogen (H2) in sulfur removal and recovery operations. Standard features include color touch screen display and Modbus communications.
For > 40 yr, AMETEK Process Instruments has served the hydrocarbon processing industry with a commitment to designing innovative, reliable analyzers that meet the highest safety standard and help achieve improved levels of productivity and process gas quality.
